So recently I went out to Hickory, NC to tune this very well put together FA5 consisting of a comptech stage 2 supercharger setup on the stock k20z3. The car was previously dyno tuned and ran pretty good at wide open throttle, but drive-ability was a concern. He was having an issue where anything over 10% throttle or so but less than 50% throttle would cause an awful surge / bucking that just absolutely shouldn’t be present on a daily driven street car. Also, it would do it if you half throttle or even full throttle but don’t go all the way up to high rpm and then go to the next gear and not flooring it the car would buck violently. It was crazy lol!
As I started tuning the car for basic scaling and no vtec the car was ultra smooth as it should be. Once I was happy with that I start tuning the high cam conservatively and boom we start getting the hiccups/ bucking action. Not quite as bad, but something that should not be there. This one made me scratch my head as looking at the data everything seemed on par. Nothing stood out, but it was happening so fast the only thing noticeable in the logs was that the fuel injectors were cutting off for milliseconds at a time yet no compensation maps were forcing this….
Long story short after really thinking out side the box I got it figured out. It was a combination of things that honestly don’t normally have to be tweaked much, especially on this setup. I put him in the driver seat and had him drive the way he drives and the car was smooth as butter and I was happy to hear later that it feels even better in wot as well vs his previous dyno tune 🙂
My point of all this is there’s no such thing as a cookie cutter setup. I’ve tuned tons of these and every map is different and each car can present it’s own set of problems, but I make it my mission to not throw my hands up and quit. I’m here to make your car the best it can be and will put forth that effort every time! I want to thank Paul for having me out to tune his awesome FA5 and can’t wait to dial it in again once he’s ready for a bigger and better power adder!
